Maca and thyroid

The endocrine system is a system of glands. Major endocrine glands are pituitary, thyroid and adrenal glands. The main function of glands is to release hormones. In return, hormones control activities throughout the body. They also affect processes as development, sexual function, influence the way body uses and stores energy, digestion, brain and nervous system physiology, and energy levels and so on.

The main function of the thyroid gland is to stimulate metabolism throughout the body and to control the rate at which the body produces energy from nutrients. Hormones produced in the thyroid gland affects cells throughout the body, thus it regulates growth of cells and it controls the heart rate.

As an adaptogen Maca responds to the needs of the body, thus increases the body’s ability to defend itself against both physical and mental weakening. The alkaloids of Maca may activate hormones secreted by the thyroid gland. These hormones regulate the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus. Thyroid gland hormones also act as stimulants of sex hormones.
